Building your cycling fitness need not to be hard or a real effort. Find a routine that works for you and stick to it. Being regular and consistent is the key to it. How do you achieve this?
Well one solution is to find regular group programs that you can follow. It’s pretty tough to set out your own schedule and then stick to it day after day.
I train on the bike about 20 hours a week and I rock climb about 20 hours a week. As regards finding motivation to train I find it much tougher to get going on the bike than I do for rock climbing.
The reason I suspect is that when on the bike I train alone while I always boulder with lots of other people. Bouldering NEVER feels like training even when I’m doing very demanding “training exercises” (the climbing equivalent of “intervals”) whilst cycling often feels like training.
I think the lesson is to always do your training with other people. You will train harder. It will be more fun and perhaps you are more likely to stick with it.
I will leave you with Bert and Ernie from Sesame street getting to grips with a new exercise !
