Cycle training is best done with a clear purpose. When we have a clear reason and objective in mind it is so much easier to summon the will power and commitment to do the necessary training.
Since you are training for a specific event it is much easier to focus and structure your training with the specific demands that the event in mind presents.
The deadline of an event helps to concentrate the mind and means we put everything into being ready for the challenge.
Over the last 6 months I have ignored this lesson. I suppose I have been distracted by rock climbing and it has occupied alot of drive and goal setting mentality.
I have still been cycling but just ambling along. Riding about 20 hours per week BUT with no clear objective or purpose to it. If anything I have lost a considerable amount of speed and endurance from a peak mid way through last year.
NOT ANYMORE! I propose to make 2010 an extraordinary year and move my cycling performance up a gear. I propose to undertake a fresh cycling challenge. Something BIG. Something SCARY. A leap into the unknown. Something to test my physical abilities and my mental strength to it’s limits. I’m looking for an event or adventure anywhere in the world.
I would also like to do the event for a charity. I don’t have any affiliations to any particular charity or cause. I’m complete open minded about the event it can be a road or a mountain bike challenge. Maybe a race or a tour. I’m excited about fundraising for a worthwhile charity. Getting sponsorship and helping the charity would be amazing. Anywhere in the world. it will be fun so maybe USA, Europe, Australia or perhaps South America??
So I would like to ask YOU to help me with 2 questions….
1. Can YOU recommend a cycling challenge for me to undertake?
2. What charity would YOU like me to do it for and why?
This is a new web site and I would really appreciate your help in raising awareness. If you enjoyed this article please take a moment to comment or share it on Facebook or Twitter. I would really appreciate it. Thanks and keep cycling

ABSOLUTELY!! There are 3. First, the LIVESTRONG Challenge in Austin (90-mile, not 100. But ride to the start from someplace, and you have the 100). Second is the NYC Century Tour.
BUT… I cordially invite you to join me with my friends on our bike ride from Boston, MA to North Lauderdale, FL! It's going to range from 70-95 miles per day for 7 days with 1 rest day. (Most days fall between 70-80).
A bike ride down the entire Eastern Seaboard doesn't come too often!
Excellent… <rubs hands together>
I challenge you to do *this* non-race fundraiser: <http://www.cascade.org/EandR/stp/index.cfm>, but you're gonna have to do it in one day! (And draft me the whole way!) Reason for this is purely selfish: you get to visit my favorite *and* my second-favorite cities! Unfortunately, there isn't too much in the mental challenge department; it's simply a 200-mile day.
For sheer audacity, try this one: <http://www.tourdafrique.com/epictours/tourdafrique>, but you'd have to get going *now*! It starts in nine days! I'm a bit sad that, although I would never have been able to afford it, their Silk Route tour is much shorter than it was!
The one that I still fantasize about after reading it in a book is Lhasa to Kathmandu: <http://www.exodus.co.uk/holidays/mct/overview?>
This one also sounded heavenly: <http://www.keadventure.com/trip/4079/mountain-m… *really* like the idea of being way out in remote nothingness.
Reason for suggesting the last three: I fully expect you to blog about it, and then I get to do those trips vicariously!
Charity: There are so many worthies… Fitting with the theme, it should be at least peripherally bicycle-related… Livestrong has that 'cycling' aura about it, and there are several 'Bicycles for Africa'-type charities, but I like keeping things local. Local for me, that is! Anyway, BikeWorks <http://www.bikeworks.org/about.php> is a local bike shop that does youth education, bicycle advocacy, provides a mentoring program, and they promote sustainability.
By the way, if you do end up on the West Coast of the USA, you'd better show yourself in Seattle!
Hi – We are running some challenging trips, which is how we have been doing things for almost 20 yrs now. Take a look at our website – http://www.greenrock.co.uk
Lhasa – Kathmandu coming back online as well and if enough interest we would run it this year.
If we can help with free advice on the challenge rides or charity side of things please drop us a line here in icy London.
All the best from Joe & the Greenrock team.
WOW – heli mountain biking. i have never seen anything like it! I would love to do Tour de afrique. It looks such an incredible adventure. In fact a British Girl emailed a week ago asking if I was interested in riding London to South Africa in time to watch the soccer world cup.
Your Portland race looks fun. I will defietly be in USA this year BUT think it will be earlier or later in the year than that as I would like to ride some or all of the Tour de France again this year in July.
Having said all that I think you will be fit enough by then to nail the double century in the day. It will test you to the limit BUT I'm sure you can do it. Just keeop training as you are. Building your longest day ride time each week and you will nail it.
Hey rica – I had a look at your eastern seaboard ride on Facebook and it looks wicked. I'm very tempted. For anyone else who is interested check it out..

Thanks, Luke! Right now, it's a small crew. But interest is growing, sponsors are coming in… I hope this will be a blast!
I will send some tweets about it next week. Do you want people directed to your facebook page as in the link above or somewhere else ?
Sure! Either that, or do you want me to put something together for your blog?
thats a good idea. Do you want to write a guest post about it?
Absolutely!
you are more than welcome 2 join me for two weeks cycle/camping across the interior of iceland on the 3rd july…this would be a good challenge for you…
Hey paul – That sounds a wicked trip. I stopped over in Iceland for a few days on the way back from a mountaineering expeddition to Greenland in early 90's. Would love to go back. I'm thinking of riding some of the Tour de France in July but could be tempted by some time in Iceland.
