- YEARS CYCLING I have been road riding for a bit over a year. I used to ride quite a bit in the early 90′s, but quit after moving to the Outer Banks. I simply thought that the riding would be flat and boring. I haven’t attempted any Centurys since starting riding again. I have done 6 metrics this year. The biggest problems I’ve encountered were saddle difficulties and maintaining more speed. My speed has averaged aroung the 14 mph mark.
What is your current weekly exercise program ?
During the past several years, I have become very interested in overall fitness and road biking is a natural extension for me. I’m 62 years old and in relatively good shape. I weight lift 3 days a week and usually ride 6-7 days a week in season. I tend to substitute elliptical work when weather is unbearable.
What are your fitness/training goals ? Why are you taking the “100 mile bike challenge” ?
I want to continue to cycle actively and am looking for a challenge.
Which sports person inspires you the most and why?
I like most sports that are not team sports. I like to see someone put their own personal performance on the line, rather than being part of a team. I think Tiger Woods is very inspirational.

Hey Sam – welcome and thanks for taking up the challenge of a 100 mile bike ride. I'm really looking forward to helping you to achieve this goal. I have sent you an email with details of your 1st training ride. I hope it goes well. When you have done it please post the results and the information as detailed in the email here. Then we can work together on a specific training program for you.
Thanks for setting me up. Snowstorm and sick with flu. Hope to be back in the saddle next week. Hope to do Century on 4/24
Happy Christmas – Sorry for late reply I have been staying with my parents in France over Christmas and their rural farmhouse doesnt have an internet connection.
I will be glad to see the back of this cold and snow too!!
Hope you are feeling better and back on the bike soon.
Let me know how you get on and lets plan some training for January.
Luke, I did 67 miles yesterday. Hoping this would give you some idea of what your looking for. The first leg of the trip was 22 miles. I only tried to keep a cadence of around 80 and a heart rate in the 100-110 range. I ride a Cannondale Synapse.
My travel time for the first 22 miles was about a hour, 20 minutes. The wind was pretty neutral and the road surface was smooth except for a stretch of around three miles through a residential area, which was pretty rough. Hope this covers what you need.
