Hey Rica – welcome and thanks for taking up the challenge of a 100 mile bike ride. I'm really looking forward to helping you to achieve this goal. I have sent you an email with details of your 1st training ride. I hope it goes well. When you have done it please post the results and the information as detailed in the email here. Then we can work together on a specific training program for you.
Will do. Do smaller rides count as things we need to post, too? I log everything in MyCyclingLog… shall I share that link whenever I put an entry in?
Hey Rica – Yes post the link each time would be fantastic.
It is entirely up to you whether you document each ride but I believe that EVERY RIDE COUNTS and goes towards making you a stringer rider. Regardless of whether they are done as part of commuting or so called “training” and if anything commuting rides can be more useful as they are often quite intensive as you must start stop start stop with the traffic lights and so on.
Since you are doing alot of riding as patrt of your commute it might make sense to structure a chunk of your training into those actual rides ?? This perhaps depends on how loaded you and your bike is and so on. Are you still carying that really heavy bag on your comute ??
Hey Rica – have you thrown the scales away yet !!!!
Happy Chriastmas & New Year – Hope you are having a good break
I have thrown away the scales (well, not thrown away, but I haven't stepped foot on one). I need to get a trainer, though! I've tried to get out there and ride a couple of times, but no matter how much neoprene I have on, I still get painfully cold. BUT… Christmas Day I got 20+ miles in with my son. Saturday went out for a ride, but had to turn around after 4-5 miles. He was way too cold and I hadn't noticed that I couldn't feel my toes anymore.
BUT… I'm registered already for the Bloomin' Metric… have the TD 5 Boro NYC Ride on my calendar (registering on 2/1), and I'm registered for both the Philapdelphia and Austin LIVESTRONG Challenges – I'm going to TRY the 100 in Philly, though I hear the hill at mile 53 has taken out many a decent rider, and the 90+ in Austin!

Well, I'm trying to ride through it… Trying being the operative word.
Here's my log since I started cycling!

On my commute, indeed, I am still toting that heavy bag. I don't have much of a choice, as it has my computer in it, and I still have to mount my rack on the Bianchi so I can keep my tools, etc in the trunk bag I made. When I do a leisure/casual ride, I either remove the backpack altogether and keep stuff in pockets/trunk bag, or I take out all the non-essentials. Of course, Costco had a GREAT bladder-bag for $15.00, and it includes a couple of extra pockets, so I'm going to give that a shot next leisure ride I take.
It's been too dangerously cold, though, for commuting, lately.
Hey Rica – It is really tough at this time of year. Can you think of any alternatives than cycling outside ?? Are you member of a gym ? Do you do dancing classes ? Step etc What about getting together with someomne else who has a turbo trainer and then do sessions together. Training on a trubo is hard and it takes alot to get motivated for them. Maybe you could link up with someone else and train on them side by side ?? The important thing is to be doing exercise every day – is this realistic with your schedule ?
If cycling is not possible or is just no fun at the moment then you MUST find a fun alternative and ASAP to carry you through to the spring !!!!
How are you feeling about your diet and food consumption at the moment? Have you set any new years resolutions ?
LOL – I am a member of a gym, but I haven't had the chance to actually go forever. I joined hoping I'd get there at lunch, but I haven't. Don't know anyone else I could train with in spinning – hard enough to find riding partners out here, period. It's not very realistic with my schedule unless it's commuting – that's why I jumped at the chance.
Diet/food consumption was given a vacation due to the holidays – you have to do that sometimes. I splurged in a way I never do, but back to the usual “good” stuff.
I chose not to do new year's resolutions, as they often are nothing but disappointments by end of the year when you realize you didn't do them. Being very realistic.
What is stopping you going at lunch time ?? You are comfortable enough with riding that you could easily “eat” lunch while cycling on an indoor bike. This would give you 1 hour of cardio everyday. It would take the pressure off your commute and then commuting will be a bonus when weather makes it possibel ??
Alternativly ????
No new years resolutions could be a good think. NO PLAN or Strategy for achieving what you want IS NOT !! You know that to achieve a more healthly lifestyle you should be doing something FUN that raises your heart rate EVERY DAY. How are you going to do this ??
I get so wrapped up with work, by the time I realize I can go, it's already time to go home.
I'm still trying to find a good trainer. My local cycling club, however, just cut a deal with a tri-training-specific gym for free spin training every monday for members of the club.
I do need to get to the gym – it's so silly. There's my resolution. To go to the gym during lunch at least 2-3 times a week.
I'm not doing much to raise my heartrate. I am also clearing out space in my home to take up pilates again. I need to work on my core desperately – especially now that my bike is refit. I'm leaning over more and more and I don't like it when my knees hit my gut. LOL!
Hey – I know the feeling about getting wrapped up in work. BUT !!!! you know that taking time out to exercise will pay dividends. You will feel better about yourself. You will be more alert and awake in the afternoon. You will have time away from the office for “thinking” and will come back invigorated and will achieve MORE truly productive work than you would have if you didnt go.
SO STOP TALKING ABOUT IT AND GO. !!!!!!!
Hey – Hope you are well and that you had good weekend. im jusst sorting out the guest post now. Will post it tonight and tweet about it tommorrow.
Also on different note DID YOU GO TO THE GYM AT LUNCHTIME TODAY ????
Luke – just an update – including this month's riding… again, light due to winter…
